Junior from Shawnee is KU’s 80th Barry M. Goldwater Scholar
The only students eligible for nomination are sophomore- and junior-level students with outstanding academic records, significant research experience and high potential for careers in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering. Alexa Magstadt is majoring in molecular, cellular & developmental biology and minoring in Spanish.

Two KU juniors to compete for Astronaut Scholarships
Two outstanding University of Kansas undergraduates are representing KU in the Astronaut Scholarship program. The six surviving members of the Mercury 7 mission founded the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) in 1984 to encourage students to pursue scientific endeavors to keep the U.S. on the leading edge of technology.

KU junior Allison Muzzy nominated for Beinecke Scholarship Program
The University of Kansas has nominated a junior from Leavenworth for the Beinecke Scholarship Program, which annually offers awards to 20 undergraduates who intend to pursue a research-focused or fine arts master’s or doctoral program in the arts, humanities or social sciences.

KU senior from Lawrence is first-ever Jayhawk to be named a James C. Gaither Fellow
As part of the fellowship, Charlie Johnson will be assigned to scholars in Carnegie’s Middle East Program in Washington, D.C., assisting them with research and writing on projects related to the Middle East and North Africa.

KU student Audrey Rips-Goodwin awarded Astronaut Scholarship two years in a row
Audrey Rips-Goodwin, an Overland Park senior in chemistry and mathematics, is the University of Kansas’ 2024 Astronaut Scholar — an award of up to $15,000. Rips-Goodwin was also named an Astronaut Scholar in 2023.

Campus Compact, a national coalition of colleges and universities working to advance the public purposes of higher education, has named the 2024-2025 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows. DaNae Estabine, junior in psychology from Olathe, is KU's fellow, nominated by Chancellor Douglas A. Girod.

The Center for Undergraduate Research has announced the winners of two annual awards recognizing undergraduate research mentors who make a difference in the lives of their students at KU. Cindy Berrie, professor in chemistry, and Laura Kirk, associate teaching professor in theatre and film, are the 2024 honorees.

KU celebrates undergraduate research at annual symposium
More than 130 undergraduate students participated in the 27th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium this year. The symposium took place online April 15-19, and volunteer judges selected 28 individual presentations and three group presentations to receive Outstanding Presentation Awards.

KU has nominated a junior from Lawrence for the Beinecke Scholarship Program, which provides $30,000 to selected students for graduate study in the arts, humanities or social sciences. Teresa Wright is majoring in visual art education and minoring in the history of art.

Two KU juniors named 2024 Goldwater Scholars
Juniors Cecilia Paranjothi of Lawrence and Kaitlyn (Kit) Savoy of Olathe are the 78th and 79th KU undergraduates to be given a Goldwater scholarship since they first were awarded in 1989. Paranjothi is majoring in chemistry, and Savory is majoring in biological sciences and minoring in chemistry and theatre.
