Rising Scholars
The University of Kansas Rising Scholars are students in their 3rd to 5th semester who have demonstrated academic achievement and exhibit promise as candidates for competitive national fellowships and scholarships. The Rising Scholars program aims to introduce students to these prestigious awards to spark interest and connect them to upper-level peers, KU faculty and staff, and current and former award winners. Students selected as Rising Scholars will receive an email notification in early spring.
What's a Fellowship?
That's the number one question we get!
The word "fellowship" has a lot of meanings, but we focus on scholarships and fellowships that are related to experiential learning (study abroad, research, internships, public service) and professional development for future career and graduate school opportunities. The very process of applying for a fellowship can be a rewarding experience that helps students learn more about themselves and their goals.
Rising Scholar Events
Each February we host a Rising Scholars brunch to help students learn about what fellowships are and why they should apply for them. Our featured speakers are KU alumni and partners who have gone through the process. They will share their stories and talk about the benefits these programs have had on them.
Three additional core Rising Scholars events are held annually to help students better understand the application process and prepare to apply for nationally competitive opportunities now or in the future.
February: Rising Scholars Brunch - introductory event
March: Workshop #1 - Fellowships & Scholarships: How to Become a Competitive Applicant
April: Workshop #2 - Resume Tips for Fellowship/Scholarship Applications
September or October: What to Expect When Applying for Fellowships & Scholarships (with pizza!)
